Non-Invasive Cardiovascular Testing | Invasive Cardiac Procedures
Pulmonary Hypertension is a condition where one develops abnormally elevated blood pressure in the lungs, which in turn can lead to adverse effects on the right sided heart chambers (right atrium and right ventricle). Pulmonary hypertension has various causes, and therefore its treatment options vary. Successful and cutting edge treatments depend on an accurate diagnosis.
The accurate diagnosis of Pulmonary Hypertension relies upon measuring the blood pressures within the various chambers of the heart, which is achieved via a careful right heart catheterization procedure (link to right heart cath section). There are new, modern therapies for people with particular types of pulmonary hypertension. These therapies are proven to be helpful for patients if we can prove that pulmonary hypertension responds to certain vasodilator challenges done in the cath lab. If we can prove in the cath lab with certain drugs that the blood pressure in the lungs will decrease, then the patient are likely candidates who will benefit with these newer agents.
This is another example of the physicians at South Palm Cardiovascular Associates striving to stay up to date, and deliver modern & cutting edge therapies unique for each patient.
